Easter 2021 | A Picnic Breakfast by the Lake

In John chapter 21, the Bible says that the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after the Resurrection was on a beach by the sea of Tiberius, where he prepared breakfast for them. Each Easter, we read the accounts of His death and Ressurection, and after last year’s reading, we were inspired to start a new tradition…

Easter Breakfast on the beach.

Codorus Lake is the closest “beach” we have to us without driving three hours, so I scouted out a few spots last week and picked a picnic table that overlooked the water, facing east so we could see the sun come up.

We prepared and packed a few things to eat and drink, inspired by what they may have had at that time. We had fish (smoked salmon), bread, and wine, with a few other things to compliment.

Tyler, his brother Jarod, and I arrived just as the sun was coming up. It was hidden behind soft billowy clouds, peeking through every now and then, showing off pretty pastel tones and hues.

We set the table and took a minute or two to pour a glass of wine (first time we’ve ever done that at 7:00 am lol), breathe in the fresh morning air, and think about what that very same morning must have been like about two thousand years ago.

We talked and ate and listened to the birds, watched the clouds roll, and enjoy being together.

Afterwards, we headed back to our house to read the scriptures by the fire out back, with more wine and warm sunshine. We read the Ressurection and Ascension accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and even the first few chapters of Acts, and talked through the varying perspectives, interesting details, and more… Our conversation got super deep there for a while, and it was awesome… my favorite kind. :)

I had sage from last year’s garden burning with some of the flowers we’d taken to the lake with us, including real olive branches and lilies. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, chime was gonging, and we could just feel the specialness of the morning spent together. Simple, peaceful, and full of truth and love.
